Young people in the Republic of North Macedonia know a bit about public finances, and they even see finance as a very distance topic to them. Yet, the financial education and literacy is more than necessary for each young person, no matter the background, the experience or professional occupation. As a response to this issue, we created a public campaign with an aim to raise the awareness of youth for transparency and accountability in regard to the public finances, but also to educate them on their personal finances.
Using comics as a tool which is engaging, popular among youth and speaks the youth language, we hope to reach out to a wide range of youngsters and to boost their financial literacy.
Through this journey we are led by a special character (super hero) – Finance Man.
By developing unique comics organized in 5 episodes and presenting the super powers of Finance Man, we want to help young people to: understand better some terms and parts of the public finances, to educate them on financial topics and to become more aware of their financial independence as well as how the state financial institutions are operating. Burning issues regarding financial literacy in the country are presented: from the work of the Central Bank to concepts of inflation, in the same time reminding on the standards, values and importance of finance in everyday life.
With this project we targeted youth in general, as well as media but also the young people’s parents, who are an important chain in the process of bettering the level of financial literacy and thus, of the financial independence among youth.
Through the process of pointing out what financial literacy means in practice, we wanted to emphasis what financial literacy is and define the basic terms in the sphere of public finances, or rather to demystify the term and explain concrete basic examples showing the consequences of a lack of knowledge in this area.
The project is supported by European Union, Balkan Monitoring Public Finances and Analytica.
